A medical device used to determine the estimated concentration of glucose, or sugar, in the blood is known as a glucose meter. This device is essential for the use of people suffering from diabetes in conducting tests to monitor the level of glucose in their blood at the comfort of their own homes and in places where it is convenient for them to conduct the blood testing. Glucose meters require the so-called Glucose Test Strips; where in a drop of blood from a person with diabetes is placed. The meter will then read and use the strip to calculate and determine the level of blood sugar.

Different types and models of glucose meters were released to the market by many manufacturers. The amount of blood needed in a testing session depends on the amount of blood the model needs in order to obtain a more accurate result. Some models may require small volumes of blood while others may need a larger volume of blood samples, usually termed the “hanging blood” drop from the tip of the finger.

Models that require smaller volume of blood are preferred by many diabetic patients as these lessen the need of having to prick the fingertip more than once just to obtain the hanging blood drop. Glucose meters are available at many medical suppliers and online distributors of medical devices.
